So upon reading more books from people who have spent some time in Africa, I find myself wondering, am I doing this American in Africa thing right. I feel somehow as if I should write more stories that involve rolling hills and elephants and lions and maybe some cows and all of my one-ness with nature. Also, I should mention the hardships I endure involving mosquitos and malaria and bucket baths and not owning a washing machine and baking on a charcoal stove, or cooking on a kerosene jiko.
Anyway, just to not let you all down I'll tell you that I wash my underwear every time I take my bucket bath. I've installed alittle shelf thing in my bathroom so I have a place for them to dry out when they are done. Also I use the same soap to wash my dishes as I do to wash my clothes including underwear. But hey, soap's soap right? When you get down to it, if it gets the dirt out, it's all good with me.
Honestly its got alot of similarities with living full time at the cabin, in that you rig up what you can and make do with what you got. At the same time, it's easier, in that I do have electricity most of the time, and running water a good portion of the time. Also since its so hot I haven't spent time heating up the water to bathe with, cause a cold shower on a hot day is really quite nice.
Maybe that's why I don't talk about those things as much, cause I spent to much time at the old berry homestead as a child, in jeeps that needed good solid yet slightly bendy trees to stop and sometimes a good push to start ( btw - tinkerbell'd fit in right nice here). Also took too many bathes in lakes, and using a knife to gut a fish and then right after cut yourself a slice of cheese or apple doesn't really shock. Give it a wipe with the rag, she's as good as new!
Anyway, really honestly I talk about the culture too much cause it's by far the biggest adjustment I've had to make. You don't realize how many things are just inherently understood in a conversation or a meeting of a few people, until, they're not. It's amazing all the dialogue people have within the same culture without saying anything at all. Really, and honestly I kid you all not.
Also of course, Zanzibar being especially muslim makes it even more of a culture switch. But in anycase, I've lately been feeling alot more at peace with the whole thing. Its nice. Its kinda like, I've decided ok, I'm not a guest anymore, this is my home too, I'll express myself alittle. I don't know, but its nice.
And with that said, I'll sign off for now. I hope you all are thoroughly more satisfied with my african americanizing things a bit. Sometime when I get near elephants I promise to speak more about them. Until then! Love
